What is your phone model again?
I have 2 GB of RAM but I never had a crash of any app on my Honor 5X, including of BASIC!
But on my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact the BASIC! Editor terminated from time to time... ("app has stopped working")
Maybe it has to do with the manufacturer layer on top of the OS?

Samsung Tab 4 8'' 4G 1.5GB RAM
Android 5.1.1.

I think it mainly depends on how many apps you have installed (I have many) and how many resources they consume in background (I see in the task manager that I always run near full RAM capacity).

Ah you're right, Honor phones have a very powerful (but sometimes annoying) task manager that automatically recycles apps to save memory (and battery life).
Maybe that's why I never had a crash of any app...
But on the downsize, I'm incapable to use any "dynamic" widgets: clock, weather forecast, google agenda, they all freeze after a few hours (the system must kill their background activity, the UI remains on screen but it's a hollow one).
