I just wrote a new audio player (for my special purposes aka as "reasonable >shuffle all<").

List of playable formats misses "FLAC", which works very well.
FLAC nowadays has to be preferred as it
a) is offered unter free an open licence (BSD/GPL)
b) offers lossless quality
c) uses less performance than other - compressed - formats when being decompressed at play time.

(Well, it takes some more space to store FLACs, but remember: size doesn't matter! At least not today with usually +16GB memory in your smartphone.)

size still does matter for some. not everyone is willing to spend $300+ for said '+16GB'. i myself for one am using a phone with 1.7GB storage ($50). each FLAC file is roughly 10MB per minute

according to Android specs FLAC is supported from version 3.1 upwards, so i see no reason for it to not work.

I'm not sure if Android hardware is even able to reproduce the sound quality.

I doubt it...

even if it doesnt, your ears can't even tell the difference between FLAC and an mp3 file with a decent bitrate.

personally i think FLAC is a waste of space unless you have a specific need e.g. you are a musician.

Back in my day some studio albums/singles were recorded on DAT, (I know one independent label that did at one time).

That’s a tinny sound if I ever have heard it...

I have known people that told me otherwise, that they could absolutely differentiate a lossless sound format from a lossy sound format...
I have some doubts!
Then again it's not the worse I've heard. I've known other people saying they could "feel" the WiFi waves in their brain.
Needless to say I tried this by setting my router on and off for him to detect and it was total bulls**t :)

I guess it could be possible to re-master sound. At least remove hiss, add tone or some sort of other depth. Replace the quality? Maybe one day perhaps. We can do it with pictures, films now...

As for feeling WiFi waves in ones head? Mines already got a radio in it telling me what to do! Maybe I should get a job at the National Enquirer?

I guess things can oscillate just right, I remember as a kid I just put a crystal earpiece across a diode whilst experimenting and got a radio station without a tuning cap, aerial earth or anything.
